Autumn is here, long live the mowing before the winter work

By |Published on: September 27, 2022|

When the days become cooler and the water temperature drops below 12°C, the vegetative rest period begins for Baignade naturelle®. Emergent aquatic plants dry out and need to be cut back to 5 cm above the water level (mowing). Now it's time to start the autumn work in preparation for wintering.

The flowers of the aponogetons and small moats will last until the frosts, and only the bulrushes will continue to produce their small, whitish spikes until they are mowed. Now is the time to make dry bouquets of cattails, reeds, horsetails...

The main actions to be taken

What to do for wintering

The plants

Cut emerging aquatic plants to around 5 cm above the water level (Caution: the plant will die if you cut it below the water surface).

The pool & its equipment

Clean the bottom of the bathing area (robot) as long as there is no frost.

The water

Regularly check the overall appearance of your water: color, transparency.

Advice

The plants

Stretch out a net to make it easier to pick up leaves, or regularly collect leaves that have fallen into your pool. Do the same for the stream/waterfall path.

The pool & its equipment

  • Check that the equipment room is watertight and insulated.
  • Check and empty the circulation pump prefilter.
  • Check that the filter pump is working properly.

Just in case

The pool & its equipment

  • Remove skimmer shutters and store frost-free.
  • Before freezing: turn off the (automatic) water supply and drain the system.
  • Water circulation: 2 possibilities.
    • Leave the pump running (day and night) without interruption.
    • Shut down the pump for the winter. Unscrew the supply and discharge valves and remove the pump and prefilter from the equipment room. Dry pump and prefilter and store in a dry place.

Regular maintenance prevents 90% of problems.

Budding artists!

Sedge, bulrush and cattail leaves can be used for basketry. Dried rushes can be used as ties and to make small objects. Reeds can be used to make canisses.
You can also make dried bouquets from horsetails, reeds and cattails (in autumn).
